Classifications of Industry Standard Flanges

Flanges are essential components in many industries. They are used to connect two pipes as well as to anchor pipes. These metal components actually connect the ends of two pipes either through welding or threading. As a matter of fact, flanges are broadly classified as welding flanges or threaded connection flanges. Although the process of attachment is different, both of these flange types provide almost the same degree of security and strength to the pipeline. When connecting two pipes using a pair of flange, a gasket should be slipped in between the flanges and then secured with several bolts. When choosing flanges for whatever purpose, it is important to go for Industry Standard Flanges. These flanges have passed the quality control tests set by regulating agencies and, hence, are guaranteed to be of high quality.

The advantage of flange joints is that they can be detached when needed. There are types of that come with detachable components which can be divided into the tube flanges and container. Flanges can also be classified depending on the structure types such as threaded, loose and integral flanges. Integral flanges can further be categorized as flat and butt welding types. Flat flanges are intended to handle loads that do not exceed 4Mpa due to its inferior stiffness. On the other hand, butt welding type is designed for high pressure and temperature loads due to its superior stiffness. Flanges can still be categorized based on their sealing faces. These types are designed specifically for unique purposes, for example: flanges with tongue-and-groove sealing surface are intended for explosive, toxic media, and high pressure media; flanges with and uneven sealing surface are for materials with slightly higher pressure; while flanges with planar surface are for low pressure media.

Each kind and type of Flanges has its own tolerant pressure and thus is intended for specific purpose. Normally, the gasket slipped in between the junction determines a lot. Gaskets are commonly made up of non-metal products; some of the most common include polyethylene sheet, rubber sheet, asbestos, and so on. Gaskets are also specifically intended for the media; for example, acid-resistant asbestos is commonly used with corrosive media. On the other hand, gaskets made of metal sheets of stainless steel, aluminum, and copper are preferred for high pressure media.

Industry Standard Flanges can be classified depending on the standard system used for its processing. Three of the common classification systems include the ANSI system, DIN system and JIS system. The first two systems grade the sealing face types and common pressure levels. The JIS system is not widely used and accepted. Aside from these standards, the fabrication of flanges should pass the regulations such as mechanical standard, chemical industry standard, pressure vessels standard, and GB standard.

Some flanges are also specifically designed for certain projects and unique functions. Aside from passing the standards, they should also meet the specifications listed by the engineer.
